Spec levels were not bad - remote central locks, electric windows, air con, velour seats, power stering, ABS, airbags etc Quite surprisingly its handling was excellent & the 1.4 16v engine very lively & economical.
Sold it to my dad 2 years later & he punishes his cars but the Almera has so far taken this very well indeed. Its now 7 years old and on 80k miles still the only work needed was the clutch in 2003.
If you need a reasonably cheap & reliable hatchback its not a bad choice at all & certainly better than the daewoos etc you would be looking at if you wanted cars of similar age spec and price

I picked up an older (P) Almera 1.4 4-door as a runabout. It's not a particularly exciting or quick car, but it's been comfortable, reliable & durable. I drive for work and it's done some long trips no problem. Only real criticism is that the plasticky dash is glossy black, so reflects up onto the windscreen on bright days. I put a matt rubber piece on the dash to ensure a good forward view in summer!
I always loved my Mk 3 Golf's but fell out with the company and local garage. Both very unreliable and devious.
Bought Almera Sport 2002 in 2004 and never looked back.
Pulls my trailer tent without any trouble and looks well.
Interior not as high standard as the V.W. but what the hell when it is comfy, a lot cheaper to buy and run and has just as much room inside.
Garage are very helpfull and honest which is more than can be said about the other!
