Blocked Tear Duct
3 Answers
I have the use of only my right eye which has now developed a blocked tear duct. I had an appointment at my local hospital but they said it was too far gone to have surgery. It's particularly bad in the evening which I think is related to tiredness.
I wondered if anyone has any ideas that might lessen the effect.
Thanks in advance

"said it was too far gone to have surgery. " I am not sure what was meant by this...did you ask for further details. DCR is what the post by KARL is all about and is a very successful procedure in the appropriate hands, so there must have been a good reason for turning you down. Also... operating on the only functioning eye ups the " ante" considerably as if it goes...

My wife had a blocked/unsalvageable tear duct as a result of some infection. They drilled a hole between eye and nasal cavity and induced replacement tear duct growth. If I remember correctly they did this by threading something through and then at some point pulled it away - voilá, a new tear duct. It works perfectly to this day some 20 years or more later.

Also...operating on the only functioning eye ups the "ante"considerably as if it goes wrong.....then you are very much in trouble.
I would certainly ask for a second opinion.

Ironically I am one eyed from radiotherapy and would be less willing to have someone have a go at my good eye.
and I also have a plug in one of my tear ducts as they took out the tear gland as part of the therapy
It might be worth an appt at an Eye Hospital
Eye surgeons go round in different flavours -
anterior chamber, retinal, oculoplastic -
and you need to get to see the one who does the operations (GP needs to refer you to the correct one)
