What Did I Do Right ?

I was just about to throw away all the geraniums ( alright, pelargoniums) which I had tried to bring through the winter in the garage. I had assumed that the recent fierce frosts here ( midlands-ish) had killed them, but was amazed to see that more than half of them showed signs of life ! In the past, plants in the same place have not survived such frosts, so what could have happened this time ?

Did you tell them that they were due for the compost heap ?

I think Ive lost all of mine.. most of which Ive had for years..Ive cut them all back and will wait a bit longer, just in case but the stems are not looking good..
