I'm confused

I was confused by Tilly's comment at 19:45 (if she'd typed the OP's name I might have understood), and I'm wondering now if what seems a straightforward answer using the 'university man' as the definition might be wrong if it's a themed quiz as I recall someone mentioning book titles on one of these Learning Curve clues recently. Also my last syllable was more a sound of surprise rathe rthan a cry of pain so maybe my answer was wrong
