as far as I am aware- it is just called a comma as ML says- or you can be upmarket and call it a thousand seperator. It is used by convention- though some countries I believe use a space instead of a comma

Well here in Greece (as in many other parts of europe), it's not a comma, it's a dot: the comma is used as the decimal point, so thousands separator is a more generic way of referring to it.

I believe the British way of separating numbers is to use a comma, and use a full stop for the separation of the number and the decimal numbers.

The continental way is the other way round.
