One required major surgery i.e. complete removal of the gall bladder, one removed itself (i.e. passed through) and one had to be removed using laser surgery. I am not sure about a stone in the digestive track, his were in his gall bladder, and latterly kidney stones. Don't worry the modern treatment is quite painless.
My wife had gallstones about 15 years ago and they were taken out leaving a huge scar across her stomach . I believe now in addition to the methods already mentioned that if the stones are small enough they can ''blast'' them with ultra sound so that they can pass out through the digestive system. She had her stones in the gall bladder and she said the pain they gave was worse than childbirth.
