The university professors are having a birthday party and they take the opportunity to test Trevor's cleverness. Trevor must cut a birthday cake into exactly eight pieces, but he's allowed to make only three straight cuts, and he isn't allowed to move pieces of the cake as he cuts it. How can he do it?

Cut into four quarters then make a horizontal cut through the middle

Cut into four quarters then make a horizontal cut through the middle

I received this ans but by this ans only 6 pieces
Hold knife horizontally for 3rd cut, from left to right.
If he isn't allowed to move the cake as he cuts it, can he move the cake after the first two cuts. I think a silly, pointless question deserves an equally silly answer. After the first two cuts making 4 quarters, pile the quarters on top of each other and make the third cut through all four pieces.

PS Irish guy goes into pizzeria and orders a pizza. Chef makes pizza and asks him, will i cut it into 6 slices or 8? Irish guy says, janey i'm not hungry enough for 8 slices, cut it into 6.
insert the knife and make a circle cut through the cake, then cut into quarters
the 3rd cut they are talking about makes a cut that will leave the cake like a victoria sponge - ie 2 layers. so the first 2 cuts make 4 quarters, the 3rd splits the cake into 2 layers., giving 8 pieces.
sorry for repeating perfectly good answers but some folk seem confused
