If you use outlook then it is a .pst file in c:\document and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook The local settings folder is usually hidden and I am talking about Windows 2000/XP here
OK, I will explain my answer more fully: Once again I assume you are using Windows XP or Windows 2000 (doubtful) not an earlier operating system like Windows 98 (or Windows 95 or Windows ME). Outlook Express (OU) stores the e-mails in files with the ending DBX so you will have inbox.dbx, sent.dbx etc and they are in a folder which is hidden on your hard drive (to stop you deleting it by mistake). In order to see the hidden foilders you must explore windows (right click My Computer > Explore) then in the My Computer windows go Tools > Folder Options... > click on the View tab then ensure the "Show hidden files and folders" is selected (has a bullet point) OK your way out. In My Computer you should be able to navigate to "Documents and Setting" then your name (not All Users or Default User that is why I put in <username> above) then local settings then application data then identities then a long number in {} brackets (which is why I put in {xxx} above) then microsoft then outlook express. You can use your CD burning software (I assume you have a CD burner and CD burning software) to make a copy of these files.
Mistake in my previous post: OE not OU. There are other ways to archive your e-mails: 1) Create a folder on your desktop called "old e-mail" and drag the e-mails that you want to copy from OE into it. The mails will have an EML ending. You can easily drag them back. 2) Export the e-mails to a .pst file. In OE go File > Export > Messages and it will create a .pst file. Just remember where OE has put it. It is much harder to import these messages back into OE as .pst files are used by OE's older brother Outlook (which comes with Microsoft Office) so you will need to have outlook on your PC for it to work.
I should say that you can easily copy your internet explorer favourites as they are stored in a folder called "favorites" that is in your profile (C:\documents and settings\<username> where <username> is your name). Any clearer?

Here's another way to save Favorites.
1. Open Internet Explorer, click File. Select Import/Export.
2. Click Next. Choose Export Favorites by highlighting it. Click Next.
3. Select Favorites. Click Next.
4. Choose a location to save your file (eg My Documents). Give it a name (eg July Favorites).
5. Click Save, then Click Finish.
6. By right clicking you can choose to Send To: Floppy, CD.
