Wireless Routers for wireless laptops etc

Which make of wireless router is best for a cable modem.Do I have to buy an adaptor so that the laptop recieves the signal from my bedroom so that I can use it either downstairs or in the garden.What is a network card.

First you want a wireless router that can be used with a cable modem not ADSL so ignore any ADSL wireless routers. I have an inexq wireless router which is crap so don't get one of those (and a lot of people on the internet agree with me). Netgear and Belkin are industry standards. You need a wireless network card in your laptop to use the wireless router wirelessly. Most modern laptops are already wireless enabled but if not you need to buy a wireless PCMCIA network card. This fits into one of the slots in your laptop. Get one with a large MBps number like 54 or 108 as they tend to be more powerfull and work further away from the router (oh, and get a router with a large MBps number 'n all). A network card can either be a PCI card (which fits in a desktop computer) or a PCMCIA card which fit in laptops. And they can be either wired, like a standard ethernet network card, or wireless. They allow computers to exchange information with each other either through a wire (ethernet cable) or wirelessly.

Im not sure how to make as detailed an answer as the person above me, but me and my dad are linked wirelessly and have no problams with the Belkin hardware. Tho i must say, our printer isnt connected properly so i cant print from my computer to my dads printer.

I have a cable modem and have been using my Linksys router without any problems for over 12 months.

Easy to set up and secure and excellent wireless range.

I have NTL Cable Broadband and have an Actiontec Wireless Router as recommended by NTL.It cost me �99 and came with and adaptor and Network card, which I do not use because my laptop already has built in Wireless Technology.I have never had a problem with my router, but I only bought it because I had no experience with setting up a wireless connection, and the router came with a disc showing how to set it up.To be honest, if you know how to set up the wireless connection (its easy once you know how), I would go for a Linksys or Belkin router as they are much cheaper.
