how do i play online games?

How do I play or join any online game that loads of people play but I can't seem to access? You know the ones, adventure games or action games where people from all over are playing online. I am a complete novice so please bear with me but I really would like to know so I can join in very, very soon. Many thanks.

Most online games you have to buy the game 1st in order to play them. I'm thinking of games like World of WArcraft, Lord of the Rings etc.

However if you want a free one, that's ok(ish) to play, and you can download straight away, there's quite a few out there. Try Goggling "free MMORPG games", one that springs to mind is Runescape.

If you're going to buy one, may I suggest World of Warcraft (WoW), Im seriously addicted to that one!

Most of the real Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG) require you to buy the game and pay a monthly fee i.e EverQuest, City of Heroes, Lord of the Rings online etc.

The green dollar sign in the list requires you to buy the game and the blue dollar sign requires a monthly subscription to play online. Any other game that doesn't show either a blue or green dollar sign is completely free :
