Restrictions On Water Usage For Each Household Coming

Just heard on the news they are talking about restricting water usage for each household next. Do you use a lot of water? I am on a water meter and I dont waste water, just use what I need.

There are those who use less than they need because it's metered. Uncivilised move to bring meters in for domestic properties and charge using them

Not heard of enforced restrictions though. Are they "smart" water meters.

Bednobs, I would guess washing cars, filling a pool, watering the lawn, long showers.

People who flush the loo after every visit. (Unnecessary & wasteful).

People who've got loos with both short and long flushes available but who only ever use the long one.

People who take a bath instead of showering.

People who shower for longer than the two or three minutes that it takes to get clean.

People who leave the tap running while cleaning their teeth.

People who wet shave with a running tap (instead of using a mug full of water).

People who use a dishwasher to wash just a few items (when either waiting until the dishwasher is full or simply using a quarter-full washing up bowl would be better).

People who water their gardens excessively.

People who water their gardens at the wrong time of day. (It's better to do it in the evening than in the morning, as less water evaporates into the atmosphere).

Etc, etc.

We live on a wet island off the coast of the wettest corner of a (mainly) wet continent - the concept that we are going to run out of water for domestic use is just plain ridiculous.

Fix the leaks, sort out the over-use by industry and the more profligate private users and we should be awash with spare water.

It's vile that some people are being forced to go dirty and not flush toilets because of the tyranny of the water meter - clean water is a basic human need that any civilised society sould provide 'free at the point of use' - at least for a quantity sufficient for daily life.

Much of Chris' list seems to relate to either using less than you need, or defining need as always using the least possible rather than choosing a reasonable option :-(

I certainly don't waste water. As I live alone, I had a meter fitted 10 years ago when I moved into this 2-bedroom house - it concentrates the mind to not do things like leave the water running when brushing your teeth, or flushing the toilet after every pee etc etc

I've just had the bill for half a year, and I used 12 cubic metres.

The water boards simply need to fix the leaks, according to the Environment Agency. Apparently, 3billion litres of water are lost through leakage every day. (Daily Telegraph today, page 9) "this threatens to cause significant shortages in coming years" when combined with population growth. My daughter had a huge hole open in the road she lives in last week - it had been caused by a leak - the road is now closed and it will be expensive to rectify.
