So, all these kids who stick big exhausts on their cars - do they tell their insurance companies? As far as I was aware you have to inform the insurance company of any modifications to the vehicle.

Are all these kids really telling their insurance companies and what happens if someone with a modified vehicle hits your car and he hasnt told his insurance company that he's modified it? Is his insurance invalid?

Just wondering, as these big exhausts seem quite popular with some (mostly young male) drivers.

They probably don't tell the Insurers but if they hit you generally their insurer will pay out as you are the third party and then use the non disclosure to not pay out on the fully comp bit. Assuming their fault of course.
Assuming, of course, they have any insurance at all. The cost of insurance for young drivers and the potential fine for the offence of having no insurance are a little disparate. This makes it very attractive for youngsters to run the risk.
Im not sure what the premium you pay for having a big exhaust, Id be surprised if it was that high considering it won't have a positive effect on the performance of the car.
Krammer 81 is right, unless the big exhaust increases the performance or value of the vehicle the insurance co are not interested as it doesn't increase there risk... you don't pay extra for furry dice, seat covers or mats , but could for after market turbos, paint jobs and carlos fandangoes etc
