How do you connect two laptops together?

I want to connect two laptops together to transfer files.
How do I go about doing it? Do I need a USB to USB cable?

If you only want to transfer files, can you not do this using a memory stick?

I was also going to suggest a memory stick.

Plug it in laptop 1, copy files to it, move it to laptop 2, and copy files from it.

Easy.

If both laptops have an Infra-red link ...use that.

USB? Yes, but not just any old USB cable. You'd need a 'USB Crossover Cable'. These are not too common, (my local PC World had never heard of them - typical!), but are available at Maplin
