A Sad Tale....

I rarely do sad tales but this made me very angry and shed a tear or two with my neighbour.

While I was on holiday last month (she's not been able to talk about this before today) she took her dog for a walk.....a little Pomeranian.
He dog was attacked by an off the lead ..Staff?....Pitbull?......which wouldn't let go despite her efforts...and she's a seventyish very small lady..
The owner arrived, made his dog drop the Pom.....or what was left of him....he was, in her words, shredded and torn open from being shaken.
He said sorry and ran off leaving her with the bloody body of her dog. She had enough wit to get his car number and later reported him to the police.
She carried her dog's body to her car and home....how awful that was for her.

Two weeks later, not having heard from the police she phoned them and was told they had spoken to the owner and case closed because she wasn't hurt....only her dog....it was a dog on dog incident and nothing to do with them.

But how could this young man have left her there, in a state, with her dog's body?!!

Gness - to explain a little further, my dog was attacked in March whilst he was on lead by an off lead staffie. I got the guys mobile number and it is now being investigated by the police. My boy has made a full recovery now, thank god.

My two dogs are both rescues and walk beautifully off lead. A person-to-keep-a-dog licence sounds like a great idea, but it will only be the responsible owners who get one! I fear that SOME people will always take pride in having dangerous dogs and will be unapologetic in an attack, or even bait unsuspecting dogs. Its awful.
Gness, I'm really worried about your friend, am I allowed to give you my personal details so your friend can contact me if she wants to? Not sure of Site Rules about that?
This is a vey sad tale, how could he have just driven off?

The poor dog to be attacked like that, and I really feel for your neighbour. The owner should be punished somehow.
If she doesn't want to go down the police route, if she feels awkward about it, then she can contact her local dog warden. The warden can issue an order for the owner to keep his dog leaded in public spaces. The police can issue a voluntary notice, or if escalated, can do the same of the warden. The difference with the police is if he is found to not have his dog on the lead, it gets moved up a notch to like a fine, or court hearing etc. (not sure of the specifics yet). Sorry to keep rambling on, dog on dog attacks should be taken seriously!

Thank you very much, Anthro.....through the tears I got that she'd investigated many routes before finding someone......not sure who but to do with dog welfare....who has given her advice.....a barrister is now investigating both the owner and the actions of the police.....
It was a bit garbled as you can imagine as she was reliving it but I'll make sure I chat to her over the next few days....just a chat not bringing things up again....and I'll get back to you on how she is...and what action is being taken now...
Thank you again....and I'm happy your dog is fine.....x

Thanks NoM and Marval...x
Irresponsible biggity blokes like that need sorting out! I feel so angry and so upset for your neighbour. How the hell do you ever get over this?
But the type of person who own dangerous dogs do this all the time, just walk away or deny responsibility. The law needs changing FAST ...

Hi, Patsy.......my neighbour is a feisty lady.....she's dealing with a lot of other things just now but I know she won't let this go.......for the sake of others too is what she said.....

As for how you'd get over this....I just don't know, however strong you are......the picture of her pet will stay in her mind for ever I should imagine....x
Question Author
Indeed it does, Here......and a strong enough law to stop this happening if that's possible....
Dog on dog attacks not of interest?.....That angers me too.....x
Anthro is quite correct.
A human only has to feel threatened by a dog for that dog (owner really) to be contravening the Dangerous Dogs Act.
I really don’t have the words to express all that I feel for your neighbour. Just awful x
Question Author
Thanks, Jake....I will make sure she is aware of what both you and Anthro have said.....x
I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THE POLICE DID NOTHING...THE PITBULL WAS OFF LEASH AND ATTACKED A HARMLESS LITTLE POMERANIAN. I DON'T KNOW WHAT STATE THIS TOOK PLACE, BUT IN CALIFORNIA THIS SO CALLED PET OWNER WOULD OF BEEN FINED AND THE PITBULL WOULD OF BEEN PICK UP BY ANIMAL CONTROL...I FEEL SORRY FOR HER AND THE TERRIBLE LOSS OF A LOVING PET...
Because he is one of the scum of the earth and deserves a whole lot of horrible afflictions heaped upon him....may the bluebird of happiness fly up his nose, *** and then self-destruct !!
