I'm having an argument with a friend of mine at the moment concerning Viv Nicholson who won the pools in 1961. According to Wikipedia she won £152,000 but my friend, who is 81 says it was considerably less, £75,000 due to change in gaming law. Can someone please settle this for me. Any comments would be appreciated.

you are correct.
It was £156,000 . The confusion comes from the fact that in today's money her win would be worth £3 million.
Most bios appear to suggest that it was her second husband Keith who won £152,319 on Littlewoods Pools Ltd in 1961. Keith died in 1965 in a car accident, when he lost control of his Jaguar. The estate duties were punitive and Viv was left penniless.

My father in law won £3,000,000at the age of 83. Was he happy? NO, a more miserable, mean spirited, man would be hard to find. He trusted no one, except for those he should not have trusted, professional sharks etc.
I'd say know the rules before you play, period. I gamble at a few sites and I know their rules, terms and conditions inside out so there's no surprises after. Know what you are staking, know what you will get back if it's a winner.
