One of the people who live near me has been the victim of a distraction burglary tonight. The police have been round informing everyone and asking us to be vigilant.
I'm feeling very shocked by it. I think they used the 'Problem with the water' excuse to gain entry.
I live on a sheltered complex and the person affected is 97. Despicable.

These people are hateful and sadly, despite the warnings someone can get caught off guard.

Hope the neighbour is being supported, you take care too.
These scum bags are lower than a snakes belly imo.
Don't open the door to anyone, hellywelly unless you know them or can show you some form of ID.
It's an awful crime.
for ones I dont recognise - very early out comes.....

"I cant see you but that doesnt matter as there is CCTV everywhere !" and a surprising number find something else to do ....

oh and there is - cost a £1000 or two but it is an expense I have never regretted ....
I never open the door to unexpected callers in work vans and have a go away sign thing on my door...

this one.. it seems to work
Not pleasant indeed, hellywelly.

You say that you live in a sheltered complex and the victim is 97 - it's not Buck Palace is it - Phil hits 97 today apparently.....surprised Minty doesn't have a b-day thread for him...
he didn't ask to be included in the birthday book !
I never open the door now during the day without first ascertaining who it is, by speaking to them from the bathroom window.

Those who prey on the elderly and vulnerable are cowardly and despicable. I don't think the police do enough the investigate this sort of crime and the punishments given by the courts are just a joke!
One not far from here recently, the perpetrator was caught and duly hauled up before the beak. Sentence? 28 days in the nick, suspended for two years. A joke or what!

Thank you for all the nice comments. It has shaken me up, so close to home. I'm extremely aware, but the lady who was burgled is so trusting, that generation are. A lot of us meet up for coffee on Monday mornings in our Residents' lounge. There will be only one topic of conversation I'm sure.
take care Helly..and..spread the word xx
How awful, I hope your neighbour is alright.

The people who do this are the lowest of the low.
Don't ever answer the door to ANYONE unless they are expected. I am quite a bit younger than 97 and I always adhere to this and always will. I sincerely hope this lady is going to be alright and you take care helly x
They caught my Dad like this. Once in and he realised, they knocked him to the ground. My dad shouted and neighbours came to help. They got away with small amount of loose cash. My dad was never the same after this.
