Water for ironing

Aaaarggh! I've had enough. My iron has dumped brown residue over a white shirt once too often.

If I used distilled water, would this completely solve the problem? If so, could I distill water myself at home, or would I have to buy it? I don't want any of that smelly water they sell at the supermarket. In case anyone suggests using oust or something to descale the iron, yes, I know that would be sensible, but I'd really love to prevent the iron scaling up in the first place.

Thanks in anticipation of any responses.

This happens when you dont empty all the water out of the iron after use. Each time you have finished ironing, pour out as much of the water as you can, and press the steam button several times to get rid of the rest.

I dont think distilled water would work

The brown stuff is iron oxide (rust) from the inside of the steam comprtment rewacting with residual water. Distilled water won't stop this happening - Chazza's advice will. Personally I agree they are more trouble than they are worth and it is better to spray water on.
I have a Tefal iron and it states that ordinary tap water must be used, not distilled, purified or whatever, as it has been made to suit ordinaire H20.
