Hi. Have windows 8.1 but with win 7 as start up menu (hate win 8). My AV is Nortons which is brill IMO. I have browser IE which is pinned to the task bar but even though it's not being used at the time, Nortons has a patch to put on but keeps coming up close IE before installing patch.

What I am asking is it because it's on the task bar it's showing running and if it is.... If I unpin it how do I find it again?

Cheers if anyone can solve that for me as I want Nortons to do it's job. Thanks.

Having a program pinned to your taskbar doesn't mean that it's running. However Windows has a nasty habit of making calls upon Internet Explorer, even when you think that you're not directly using it.

Right-click on your taskbar.
Click Start Task Manager.
Click the Processes tab (if it's not already selected).
Look for 'iexplore.exe'. (If you can't see it, click on 'Show Processes From All Users' and then see if it's visible).
Right-click on it and select 'End Process Tree'.

You should then be able to install the Norton patch.

Thanks for that Chris. By clicking 'end process tree' do I have to do anything after to use IE again as of course I don't want to disable it ....says a born again technophobe lol.
'End process tree' doesn't do anything other than stopping a program (and anything making a call upon it) from running. The program will still be there to use as normal when you need it. (However why anyone would ever want to use Internet Explorer beats me! It's an appalling browser. Firefox and Chrome are both far, far better)
