Is it better not to gloss paint at all in this hot weather and leave it until the general temperature by day has reduced somewhat ?

It can still be done, just get it on quickly but if you want an excuse not to blame the heat.
The fumes will be worse in the heat so that's a good reason not to do it
Maybe do it early morning or late evening ?
There should be no problem glossing in this heat. If you're using liquid gloss, add a little white spirits and give it a good mix. Helps to spread the paint easier. If there's a breeze outside, leave a window or door open to enhance drying time. If you're worried about the paint fumes, onions really do work.
