Out of curiosity, a fair few have gone, but have I missed any? I recall:

Woolworth, BHS, Comet, Maplins, Dixons, Virgin Records, MFI, BlockBuster, Toys r Us, DOITALL, Books etc, Northern Rock, Carillion, Habitat, The Cornish Pasty Shop, Poundworld. Plus numerous small biz like book shops and electric parts, That is about it. Anybody remember any others? Thanks.

and . . . dance2trance, here is a list from t'internet so that you can mark off those that are not included in this thread.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Defunct_retail_companies_of_the_United_Kingdom
>>> I'm sure there was a chain of dry-cleaners who went defunct over 30 years ago

. . . or possibly just 20 years ago?

C & A isn't that the shop that was renowned for putting labels on their Knickers to tell ladies which way to wear them?
Gents also, depending on how you decipher the C.
Fifty Shilling Tailors
Maynards
David Greig
Green Shield Stamps
^^^ I'd never heard of David Greig (I don't think that they ever made it into Suffolk) but Google took me to another few names that people might remember, as it seems that Davig Greig was merged into Key Markets (which I vaguely seem to remember seeing in a few places).

They were later bought by Gateway (which is a far more familiar name to me), which was morphed into Somerfield. That company was, in turn, bought by the the Co-operative Group.

Thinking of Gateway then reminded me of another name from the past, as the Gateway store in Stowmarket was originally International Stores.

That, in turn, reminded me that (in my childhood, over half a century ago) International Stores in Ipswich stood opposite Mac Fisheries, which was close to Dewhurst's butchery shop.

Good grief! This thread is making me feel REALLY old!
If we're talking about living memory, how about Lyons Corner House and Golden Egg, not to mention Gamages and Ellisdons (this last one may be still available online). .
Ratners are on line , aren't they ?
Pearks
Home and Colonial
Liptons
Our Co-op fish shop., long gone.
Maypole.
Russell and Bromley
.
Liptons are still trading.
British Bookshops / Sussex Stationers
>>> Liptons are still trading

. . . but not on the High Street. The tea company is still going, although it's actually part of Unilever these days. Lipton's High Street stores were rebranded to 'Presto' (or to 'Lo-Cost', in the case of their smaller stores) in 1985. They, in turn, were eventually rebranded to 'Safeway'.
Thanks, Canary42, for your reminder of The Golden Egg.

After a night out in Sheffield city centre in the first year of my student days, a visit here was regarded as essential:

(They were open 24 hours per day but, unlike the rest of the day, you had to pay for your meal when you ordered it late at night).

Sadly, The Golden Egg in Sheffield shut down well before I completed my studies. (They were probably fed up of drunken students!). So we had to resort to finding late-night chippies open instead.

Golly this is amazing I could cry. Maynards! I had forgotten! And Presto, Budgen, Macfisheries, Bestway. And yes yes Lyons Corner House, ABC Bakeries, Timothy Whites, Pier 1. And was there a PizzaLand? All alpine stylee? And of course Safeway is big in USA but we lost a great chain.Yet we survive. But with melancholy on my part at some losses..
Nobody seems to have mentioned Borders bookshops yet, which, at one time, provided a serious challenge to Waterstones.

Further, given the knowledge that there are quite a few ABers who enjoy a glass or two of beer, wine or spirits, it's rather surprising that one particular name hasn't appeared here yet. No student party would ever have been possible for us without a prior visit to . . .

In my young days it was the Wimpy Bar for a late night snack.
