I thought that this was a, twisted, revenge attack but this news story is sad. To use acid in any attack is evil - to it to attack a child is beyond .

It says that the father is an Afghan seeking asylum in this country.

Well after a spell in prison and the treatment he will receive from the other inmates, he'll hopefully wish he had stayed in Afghanistan.
If true, that sounds hardly credible. To do that to your own child. Some extremely disturbed people walking around free in society :-(
OG, the thinking appears to be that he intended the acid for his wife - and missed.
Was the mother present at the time of the incident and the wrong person was targeted? Not that it makes any difference, the doctrine of transferred malice is well-established under Common Law and provides no grounds for mitigation. "I didn't mean to hit A, I meant to hit B" will get you absolutely nowhere. It does not negate the Mens Rea of intent; in past times it led some to the gallows.
Jackdaw, //Was the mother present at the time of the incident //

I read elsewhere that she had the child in a pushchair, and turned away just as the acid was thrown.
