Yes, they are a pretty good protection although you can still tan.

I have a lovely, paper parasol that I bought in China. It opens out almost flat and provides shade for my whole body. It has been with me to many places around the world. It is a godsend.

I have a large cotton parasol, Sandy......wouldn't be without it if I'm outside.....but I'm very aware I need to keep the sun off my face...x

That sounds good. I was thinking of getting one for my next walk. It's reflective on the outside to throw off some of the heat.

I wouldn't bother with a 'parasol' - but I always take a small fold up umbrella to hot countries. Easy to pack, easy to carry.... I wouldn't be without it.
