Why did Kevin refer to Sally as 'mum' when Jack was in hospital?

I rewound it twice because I thought I had misheard - then put subtitles on to check - and they were gazing fondly at Sally at the time - I just think new scriptwriters don't familiarise themselves with backstories any more - glad I saw your comment - none of my friends caught it - and there was no comment in the TV section! I keep getting told I'm too critical - "It's only a soap!" - but it still annoys me!
