Have you been referred to a sleep clinic? Prob not a good idea to buy street merch as you have no idea what is in it.
There are Sleep Clinics to which you can be referred. You could also look into whether there are any Hypnotherapists out there who specialise in treating insomnia.

I had it for months, going back to my mid-twenties, but it spontaneously resolved.

Do you get much exercise, pumpjack? Have you tried swimming or long walks? Avoid using your phone/laptop before bedtime. Hot bath and milky drink before bed. These are probably too obvious, sorry .
Sometimes doing nothing (ie no pills) doesn't mean the doctor is doing teh wrong thing. Was he able to give any advice? You need to go back to him and tell him/her you'veresorted to buying pills on the street- I'm sure he'll try to talk you out of that.

This may sound silly but.. I suffered from chronic insomnia for many years, could go for days without any sleep because I couldn't shut my brain down. One thought would lead to another and another. My doctor at the time was really good and I was the same as you, didn't want to get addicted to sleeping pills. He suggested having the radio on at night so that I could focus on something rather than just have my thoughts. Now, I don't like the radio but I do like documentaries and plays. So, every night I put on a CD of a spoken word book or a play or even a documentary and focus on what the narrator is saying. Whilst I am listening, my brain is quiet and I find now, that I go to sleep within 10/15 mins of going to bed.
