Until the revolution in 1917 Russia used the Julian calendar and the Orthodox Church still do. This explains why Xmas in Russia is in January. Whilst most of Europe adopted the Gregorian calendar in the late 16th century Britain did not do so till 1752 when the day after September 2nd was September 14th. It also explains why the fiscal year ends on April 6th and not March 25th as formerly.
