Are Scottish bank notes legal tender in England?

I travel a lot in Scotland and return to England with Scottish bank notes. When I buy something in England with a Scottish bank note I'm almost always met with scowls and grumbles from the shop owner. Surely as a 'United' Kingdom Scottish notes are legal tender?.

No they aren't. Though many large shops will just accept them, they aren't obliged to.

It's the same with dollars and euro's. There are shops that do accept them BUT these are usually big concerns in certain area's. Me personally, if I worked in a shop, I wouldn't accept any foreign note simply because I wouldn't have a clue whether it was a real note or not.

We have terrible trouble using them in Bucks- thanks to the lovely gang who worked the area with forged fives and twentys last summer.

Sadly they're not. I went down to London recently and spent tons of money but still managed to return home to Sunny Scotland with my Scottish fiver.
Any shop is within their rights to refuse them

Just to confuse you they are not legal tender in Scotland either......

Just to add a wee bit to dzug's answer, since the withdrawal of the Bank of England pound note, there are no legal tender notes in Scotland.

If you take them to your bank they should exchange them for English notes for you.

corbyloon; surely all other Bank of England notes are still legal tender in Scotland?

And Scottish notes are not foreign currency as someone else suggested.
