In the past, when a woman was said to be 'modest', it was certainly intended as a compliment. It meant that she was not free and easy with her sexual favours and that was a quality much prized. Nowadays, it may not be as praiseworthy, since nobody seems to give a damn about such an attitude any more.

Winston Churchill once said of Clement Attlee that he was "a modest man with much to be modest about", so the idea could be used critically, too.

Having said all that, I believe it might well be intended kindly in your case. I'd advise you to go on accepting it - modestly - just as you currently do.

The standard interpretation of the word 'modest' is someone not keen to boast about their won exploiuts or accomplishments - does this sound like you?
When people say you're really good at something, do you go "Nah I'm not" even when people really think you are?
