Internet Connection

I have just got a laptop of a friend however I am having problems with the internet. Until I decide what wireless network kit i want I have temporarily got a phone line extension cable so I can use it upstairs. Can this make the connection worse in some way? Sometimes its absolutely fine though and others it can just constantly connect and disconnect or even take ages to find the modem. I am sure enough that the modem is fine however as I have been using it downstairs on my PC with no trouble at all. Any suggestions?

It can make it worse, yes. Try plugging the laptop in where the PC is plugged in and see if that sorts it.
