after reading about the shop lifter I can't help thinking that perhaps our parents and police had the right idea of a clip round the ears or legs for wrong doing ,most people I know say it didn't do them any harm we had respect for the police .teachers etc which sadly is lacking today .

Perhaps parents should be more like this!...

AuntLydia; perhaps those parents buying sweets for their kids do so because of the embarrassment they cause by their screaming?
Not all of today's youngsters are complete toe rags and I get fed up of seeing them all lumped together. Walloping the ones who cause bother is not going to solve anything.
Ken: if children learn they can get whatever they want by embarrassing their parents they will keep on doing it. Giving in to children once you have said 'no' is makeig a rod for your own back.
sherradk Who has been saying all children are 'toerags?' Gosh I hate that word. There are many many well brought up polite nice children of all ages with probably one thing in common: They have good parents that set example, outline what is acceptable and not acceptable behaviour, and follow through with appropriate discipline if necessary and praising good behaviour.
It's come up on other threads about how feckless youngsters are today (don't think toe rag was mentioned though, maybe snowflakes?) and I defended them then.
Totally agree mallyh just being threatened with it when I was young was enough. Bobbies in my day used to kick your behind and send you home. We never spoke back to teachers as they do today and certainly never was on first names with them always Miss or Mister. We always respected them, police and parents. It made us who we are today. Also never did us any harm.
I can't speak for every kid but my kids have respect for the police and teachers.
I went to school with kids that had no respect for authority...I don't think there is much difference between 'when I were a lad' and now.

Respect starts within the home....
