avg updates

i am using the avg free version virus protection but for some reason my computer wont download the updates and so now my virus protection is out of date. a friend had a look and has told me that my http scripts wont download for some reason and this is whats stopping the avg from updating - i haven't a clue what he is talking about and have no idea how to fix the problem. any suggestions?

I use Avast which is freeware and will automatically download any new virus definitions when it is registered. If it isn't registered, this service stops after a year. Could AVG be similar?

my AVG tells me when new updates are available, but I have to manually download them. I'm not sure there is an auto-update feature in the free version.

ugly_bob .. you can get AVG Free to update automatically ... go into the 'Update Manager' ... all the options to update automatically are there

How do you connect to the internet?

If by an ethernet cable, it should download automatically at startup anyway. Wireless connections may not work this way though.

Check your firewall, if you have one (you should), and make that it's not blocking AVG from downloading updates.

i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, its not a year old yet and i've never heard of an ethernet cable so i don't think this is the problem. the firewall option souded plausible and i've followed the troubleshooting option around this one but have still had no joy.

many thanks for your answers but i don't think my dilemma is sorted so any other suggestions would be appreciated.
