I am planning on getting my kitchen completely updated. I am going to buy both a new washing machine and small dishwasher. I live in a flat and am quiet concerned about the noise, especially when the washing machine is spinning. Do you get washing machines and dishwashers that are quieter than others? The neighbours put up with my cat baying at moon and his falling down my stairs and landing with a thump in the kitchen, don't want to make any more noise.

I have a Miele that is very quiet, a lot of visitors have trouble working out what machine is working (as they have machines that sound like jets taking off.) If you get a Miele catalogue it says in decibels exactly how much noise they make.
You could also stand the washing machine on carpet or any other soft material as this will reduce the vibrations to the floor and quieten it down.

Miele would be deffo the best, but very expensive - I had to settle for a Bosch but still very quiet.

I might just look at the top end of the range for a change. I am sure that my neighbours do not mind the noise, but there is no point in chancing it.

Thanks everyone.

Another vote for Miele, I got one in December and Mr Spudqueen can't believe how quiet it is compared to our old one. We got ours from John Lewis it came with a free 10 year guarantee, (covers all call outs, labour and parts) so it was more expensive to start with but hopefully should work out cheaper in the long run than getting a cheaper one which we would need to pay to get mended or pay the extended warranty on.
Hi, I have an AEG and as long as I don't overload it it's fairly quiet. I've had it for 5 1/2 years and never had a problem with it (touch wood) I will deffo buy another one.
i have an LG washing machine that runs on Direct Drive, it was expensive and has 1600 spin but it is sooooo quiet!
I have bought Miele as my sister swears by hers and it was the cheapest Miele at 500 but it is much much quieter due to the extra dosh buying you a much larger lump of concrete inside to weigh it down! Better quality build too. Make sure you have it delivered to the kitchen!

i have a bosch. v. good, quiet, and extremly reliable

Thanks to all of you.

I am getting a new kitchen this year 'sometime' and will keep the machine that I have until I see a bargain from the list of posibilities that you have all given me.

I saw one in a advert the other day with a cat lying sleeping on top of it. My cat is so old and lazy that he would need me to pick him up and place him on top!

Have just read my manual and Miele's have a superior lump of cast iron instead of crumbly concrete!!

I must admit that when my brother told me that there was a bit lump of concrete (or cast iron) inside a washing machine I considered it to to be one of his many jokes. It is amazing.
I plan to refit my kitchen and get all new appliaces when I am doing it. I am going to take my time planning it - there is nothing wrong with the present kitchen, so there is no rush.
Thanks to you all for your help.
