You could be right there, ve, but, as you know, these little exercises in philosophy and logic with all their purty overlapping circles don't mean a thing at street level. How does this arrogant, supercilious Johnbosco Nwogbo equate a dislike of, quite often, but not always belligerant, begging to having an attitude of being "Anti Poor"!
“Beggars do not work, it is said; but, then, what is WORK? A navvy works by swinging a pick. An accountant works by adding up figures. A beggar works by standing out of doors in all weathers and getting varicose veins, chronic bronchitis, etc. It is a trade like any other; quite useless, of course--but, then, many reputable trades are quite useless.”

Sanmac, answers on a postcard. The editor's decision is final.
Khandro, did actually read that as well as - the normal ones and - the "Road to Wigan Pier". I was disgustingly young at the time and can't remember much about either except this unconventional socialist's disgust at injustice and his abhorrence of fascism whether in its colonial British form, or in its far more cruel forms like Nazism, Stalinism and Maoism. The latter two having rebranded themselves with the help of the Academy and enjoying a vigorous rebirth.
I also disagree with the 'anti poor' term. A more accurate but less snappy term would be 'anti a very small section of the poor plus some not so poor beggars'- or just 'anti beggars'.
I've stopped going to my local shop and cash machine because I feel uncomfortable now that 2 more beggars have joined the regular beggar.
Obviously we can't ignore the problem but I am pretty sure that we are making it worse by allowing beggars and making begging so rewarding for some. More needs to be invested of course in sending out teams of workers to talk to these beggars and to help them back into the system, or help deal with spice/drink/drug issues or accessing benefits/hostels/advice/psychiatric help, but I realise many just don't want to be in the system.
i am not anti anything but i see a lot of beggars around and rarely if ever give to them. sorry but i have seen them drinking away the money they do get.
Round them all up. Stick them in a transition camp. Drugs, alcohol, lazy, con men etc. Then re-education and retraining, compulsive to integrate into society.
It gives the recently formed Petitions Committee something to do. Until the birth of the internet we had fallen behind on petitions, managing nothing like the levels of the 19th century.
Emmie, there is, or was, and adage that said "Beggars can't be choosers". Now it's an age of enlightenment, free choice, freedom of expression, self awareness, and blah, blahty, blah. How dare you suggest that some beggars should not imbibe alcohol and thus perpetuate their state of beggarness:)
if they think its bad now wait to see in 2030 ...the government need to get a grip on this . provide people with homes and jobs and stop this lunacy of letting 1000000s migrants with very large families scrounging off the system .....start putting our own first !!
