Hi everyone,
I am 47. I havent had a record player since I lost all my vinyl in 1996. I am thinking about buying a record player again. I love the fact that Vinyl gas had a comeback, and there is just so many records unavailable on CD that are/were on Vinyl. However, technology has changed, and im lost. At the moment, I just have a CD HI-Fi player which is plugged into my surround sound 5.1 system (which I also use for movies) via a jack lead from the surround system into the headphones socket if my HI-Fi. (It works)
However, I am thinkng of doing the same with a turntable. If I buy a turntable with a pre-amp, and plug it into my Surround System, will it work? (Not sure what a pre-amp is tbo. Dont think they had them 20+ years ago?) Also, (even if it works) would I be better soundwise with proper dedicated Vinyl speakers, instead of the surround sound system (and its accociated speakers) which seems to fit movies a bit better than my CD’s at present. This last question may seem a little stupid, but I havent had proper Hi-Fi speakers in over 10 years (just my surround sound system which I initially bought for my Blu Ray Player) and I havent heard vinyl in over 20 years. Space is more of an issue than money, so would prefer to use my surround sound system (without having to buy extra speakers and an amp) but what do you think? First, will it even work? (Pre-amp Turntable to Surround System) and secondly, sound differences between surround sound system (meant for movies) and dedicated speakers for the turntable alone?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.IICR the preamp took the distorted music data from the record, corrects it, amplifies it to a level the amp is expecting, ready for further amplification. If you don't have a phono input to your amp you'll likely need a preamp between the deck and the aux input on your amplifier. But if your deck has a preamp, then I believe it should work directly.
