He's just continuing where a whole succession of Governments, both Labour and Tory, have left off.
Apart from Thatcher of course, who demonstrated her stiff resistance to the US, (and nearly ruined this "special relationship" once and for all), by allowing the US to base its tactical nuclear weapons ('Cruise Missiles') in Britain, and then having the gall to tell President Reagan that he could only go ahead and use British airbases to bomb Libya.
Oh, and in their joint desire to see the fall of that evil, Middle Eastern dictatorship, Iran, she was quite happy to allow the sale and supply of arms to Iran's then enemy, Iraq (whose President was calles Sid? Dan? Sam? oh,... something Hussein anyway) - even using Tax Payers' money to underwrite some of the deals, so that the British and US arms dealers.... sorry, logistics and equipment specialists, still got paid even if the Iraqis failed to pay up.
Blair enrolling us as the 51st state? Pah!! we always have been.
