Elon Musk Versus Vernon Unsworth
Elon Musk is said to be a genius but he is also a bully and a nasty piece of work.
I can't see him being punished in any way that will rectify the damage he has caused to his company and to Mr Unsworth's reputation.

It is hinted that Unsworth has backers who will work for free or pay the legal bills. If that is true, then he is only wasting his time.
Musk has already climbed down once and apologised on Twitter (only to repeat the allegation again). I assume that the Tesla board will again pressure him into settling this matter out of Court.
The only good thing in all of this is seeing an arrogant $billionaire trash his own reputation (and his company's) over a petty squabble. Hopefully he will learn a lesson.

When the accusations were repeated he didn't really have a lot of option if he wanted to clear his reputation. Strange things can come out of court proceedings and judgements, but this has been very public and looks to my untrained eye, an 'open & shut' case. Whatever the fine, I'd wager it'll be 'peanuts' to Elon though. No disincentive at all when hugely wealthy.
// [Musk] knows he cannot substantiate his claims //
Unfortunately Musk has lots of money and probably has a team of investigators in Thailand at this very moment looking for dirt. People are easily bribed in poor countries, and may say anything for a lump of cash. Even if the evidence gathered is not true, it could help Musk because he only has to say he believed it to be true, and the defamation case fails.
