Samsung/mac Incompatible?

Plugged my Samsung G3 into my Mac Mini (OS 10.13), but don't see the Samsung on screen. I get a message up on the Samsung saying something about not recognised... but I've got a high enough OS.

Is there a trick to get the two in communication? I want to locate and drag photos from the phone to the Mac (and no, Bluetooth no good either!)
