I read on Wikipedia that computers have neodymium magnets installed in the hard disc drive.

I keep a very extensive archive of audio and video tapes (never made it into the land of digital recording). Should I keep my tapes well clear of the computer hub?

No – if the magnets detrimentally affected close by magnetic storage media, they would wipe the hard dive.

Sounds like they all need backing up in any case. Age deteriorates, I know from experience.
The fields of magnets in drives are fairly well confined. It is stray fields that damage magnetic recordings.

Tin foil does not shield against magnetic fields.
....and neither does aluminium foil....
but steel will
