Anorexia Vs Morbid Obesity

Watching a programme anorexic ladies I am struck by how these ladies are treated with sympathy and caring and how there is help out there for them. But when it comes to obesity you are told to eat less and move more and are treated with complete derision.

Many people who have had bariatric surgery are unable to deal with the loose skin they get as a result and the NHS won't remove it. It's not just unsightly but can cause discomfort and infections and hinder exercise. I can understand anyone putting weight on, it's so easy to do for most of us but the morbidly obese have other issues either psychiatric, emotional...

some of those people i met with serious mental health issues weren't obese, some like me had simply stopped eating, it wasn't anorexia just a way to get some control in one's life, it didn't help. I can't say that the meds always push you over the edge and make you fat but even the doctor admitted that it could be the reason for my weight gain.
But why ignored that is key, because it is socialised....... as, this is something other people do, not people like us, this is our life we have always lived like this. No one does it in our family it's like a magnet drawing them back to the unhealthy core. It takes huge effort for a child to chose a different path from the rest of the family. So mostly it continues through the generations.
Thanks Rockrose, Ummmm & Kvalidar. It has been hard work but worth it. If I did not have the support of my Master, I could not have done it. He controls my food portions so that I cant over eat and also does the food shopping so there are no cakes, sweets etc in the house. He doesn't have a sweet tooth like me so would never eat these things.
I could give you a calorie count for almost everything in the supermarket, it didn't stop me either but I had learned that eating took away pain.
Another thing not yet considered is the ghrelin pathway or hungry child hormone

There is some research coming through that suggests the heightened sensitivity to this hormone is genetic and there are examples of people that don't seem to have an off switch to hunger. This group are best treated by bariatric surgery because the removal of part of the stomach reduces the number of hormone secreting cells. Restoring a normal balance as well as providing a physical barrier to over eating.

I was obese. I was a size 30 and although very unhappy no one would have know it.
No one (or at least very few) people decide to become fat. It is a gradual change that in the end gains speed exponentially. You eat a bit too much, gain a bit of weight and become a bit slower. The cycle has begun and unless caught quickly doesn’t end well.
Fat people don’t start out fat or lazy but fat makes you fatter and lazy.
The reasons for eating too much can be many fold. From just likening some foods so much you can’t go without, to a compulsion to eat that doesn’t stop you when you’re full. Comfort eat8ng is the worse because you don’t always realise why you do it. You just do.
Whether always there or acquired through over indulgence, I simply didn’t know when I was full.
Nothing and no one would or did change my attitude to food and the instant comfort (quickly repented cycle) that it gave.
Even now I have an unhealthy relationship with food and for me the only way was surgery. My issues with food are deeply ingrained and will never go away and I imagine it is not very different for other people.

Rockrose.........my LOL was to the post of douglas and doesn't mean that i am making light of this matter.
The whole thread revolves around 3 or 4 people who want to make their points, over and over again.
Yes, I have some thoughts on the subject which i have reiterated over the years and feel that they would not add to the points already made.
One has the feeling that the topic of obesity becomes a life long crusade for some people.
The last time i added to a thread on obesity, on the weight loss and dieting subsection of Body and Soul, i was told to mind my own business and keep out of the tread, so you can see my reluctance to add to your thread.
I have been watching it with interest.

When eating for pain anything that distracts will do. A dietician told me I was the first client she had who needed to cut down my fruit intake. High carb foods make me drowsy so cereals or pasta were my downfall as well as anything sugary. It is a vicious circle because when you wake up the pain is still there and you also feel disgusted with yourself for the food you have eaten. It has taken a lot of counselling to mostly break the association between food and emotions. I try to eat what I really want when I am really hungry and only eat enough to feel ok but not full. It's blooming hard especially now that mars bar won't bring Dave back and when I feel bad I try to accept it and not try to damp those feelings down. Maybe that is part of the problem we are all supposed to be happy and successful but no one teaches you how to deal with bad stuff any more
