are you on a British passport? Then you don't, just turn up in NZ with it and they'll stamp it. For full details see my second link

If you're considering crossing the Ditch to visit Oz, then you WILL need a Visa, but you do not need one to visit NZ as a tourist

UK passport, valid for three months after you leave NZ, stay of less than six months.... no visa needed.

If you are changing planes or stopping over in Oz a (free) e-visitor visa might be an idea. If you get delayed overnight (it can happen) at least you can get out of the airport
