how can i tell when apples are ready to pick

i have two apple trees in my garden, and i dont know what sort they are. how can i tell when they are ready to pick?

Cut one and if the pips are brown they are ready.

Easy
Take the weight of the apple in your hand. Lift it up and if the stem does not give way and break it is not yet ready.

I should have said. When I was paid to pick apples that was how i was told. Upwards in an arc if it does not break leave it on the tree
