It's, when you say how beautiful everything looks this morning under a blanket of snow, and someone says, "You should think of the homeless sleeping rough".
It makes them appear more caring than you, so they gain apparent 'virtuousness', which costs them nothing, and in fact, they probably don't give a toss anyway.

virtue signalling on AB - well surely not !
consider when someone stole the cop killaz false eye. People queued up ( the usual suspects of course) on AB to say he should be cut, scarred, abused, hit with hammers, maimed, mutilated and so on and so on
whilst others virtue signalled by insisting that - Prisons were places of confinement and not torture and inmates should be protected from insitutional abuse
but of course - you might say - that is not virtue signalling - that is plain old common sense !
