The Republic was the right cause to fight (and die) for even if it was tyranny which won.
Well, perhaps, but in the end Cicero was supporting one tyrant over another -- no-one can pretend that Pompey had any respect for the Republic either.

Wasn't aware he was a mate of Pompey's, Jim, any more than the "ambitious" JC.
Maybe a "mate" is exaggerating it, but Cicero chose to back Pompey over Caesar, presumably out of pragmatism. Who knows what Pompey would have done had he won the day? But somehow I doubt it would have led to the Republic being saved.

But we digress, don't we?
