www.pokerroom.com lets you play by running a 'web applet', which does not really require a download in the classic sense, and lets you play with play money. Play money is a great idea. Or just a few bux between friends. Online poker for money.....most are losing money at it. Good luck!
By the way, you've just been dealt AH 2D by the Editor, what would you like to do?
:-)
Oh, I felt their pain soo bad. You play poker, you read books, you practice, you read again...then you end up in a tournament with a crazy person who is bluffing, no wait, she's reraising...total nightmare playing against these people, and if they get just a little luck, they win.
There is quite a lot to learn, yeah. I go to the 50-100 tables online sometimes (just to watch), with pots frequently reaching 3, 4 grand. When the flop comes these guys will have their own possible hands figured in a couple of seconds, then their opponents' possible hands, then probabilities of the main eventualities, then pot odds, then the psychological position of their opponents, then their approach based on relative stack sizes and blinds: all done in about 10 seconds. There is so much room for mistakes that if you are good on all of these counts, you will make money long term at poker, but very few do because making the least mistakes takes discipline.
www.pokertips.org has some great tips for every level. In short, I would say 'tight aggressive' will give you a huge headstart over the vast majority of low limit ring game holdem players. I've given up on that completely now, and only play sit and go tournaments. I manage second place about 30 percent of the time, first about 20 percent, and both are paid positions, so it works out ok. Mostly its just a laugh and a bit of sport.
Good luck!
I've been playing for last year or so. I use Coral, which is a download.
Play for free by all accounts, but don't assume that'll make you any good at real money games. People are very generous with pretend money, and therefore act very differently in real money games.
I play in single table tournaments. I pay $10, plus $1 commission, and join a table of 10. Each is given a number of chips (1000 for example) and only the last 3 get a payout. The advantage of this, for a learner is that you can play for almost an hour with $11, unless you get knocked out very early on. I've learnt playing this recommend it as a cheap way of playing real poker.
