It's vital to me we start them young and get them used to social situations, was not surprised at NJ's comment, but you seemed enamoured with it.

Retro - that's not realistic in this day and age. You can't predict when a family member will die. One of my uncles died in his sleep. The warden controlled flat he lived in phoned me. I have to look at my phone. I have elderly relatives. I don't play games or text people ...but I do need to be on call.

i like NJ and his sometime crusty outlook.
he often speaks the truth, some people don't like children in restaurants, he appears to be one.
My youngest brother was brought up to go out with me, we are a lot different in ages, where he was well behaved mainly because i didn't patronise him but treated him with respect. Now he instils that in his family, who are mostly a delight to be around.

Ummm - you appear to have double standards when it comes to phones - you can't have a meal out without your phone within reach and yet you say you don't take it with you when you go to bed. So you're not "on call" for these elderly relatives when you're asleep??
