Why Is John Abbreviated As Jno And Not Jon?

i understand jno is an abbreviation for john or johnathan but none of yall seem to be able to answer "why the N is before the O in the abbreviation."

I think the usage is so old, the question could probably been 'why was jno an abbreviation...' It's maybe centuries old now!
