As there appears to be at least five suitable establishments near the bridge, he could have had his sliver of cake in any one of them. If time was pressing, he might, of course, have opted to visit the "bakery" and ordered a "slice - to go."

Initially, I began searching in and around Oxon and Wilts. After some careful re-reading of the piece and noting what I thought was quite a subtle clue, that was sufficient to point me to the right location.
I liked the almost give away clue right at the start of the previous week down on the Dengie. "A backwater?" Had the "l" been inserted to make it read blackwater, that would have been, as they say . . . "mate in two" or tea and buns at the Lock Tea Room at the end of the Navigation. Methinks Mr Newsom is very much into his cakes?
