I say that because I myself once referred to Reginald Maudling's comment as outgoing Tory Chancellor in 1964, when he left a note which read, "Sorry old chap, to leave it in such a mess," for the incoming Labour Chancellor. (A later Labour Chancellor merely copied that approach, almost thought-for-thought much more recently.)
(Actually, Maudling didn't write 'chap' but the word normally used to indicate a male bird! I felt I had better avoid that!)
My word, wasn't I hauled over the coals by a prominent lady ABer for reminding members of that. Her idea was that 1964 was, effectively, in the Dark Ages!
