The word has alternative spellings...daquiri and daiquiri. As the former, it is pronounced just as Gilf suggested; however, as the latter, it is more commonly pronounced die-kir-ee, where the 'i' in 'kir' is pronounced like the 'i' in 'hit'.

'The Godfather' is, of course, an American film and in the USA the 'dak' pronunciation is probably standard. Here, in the UK, the 'die' is more often heard. It's not called for that often here, but on the very rare occasions when I have heard the drink asked for by Brits, they have invariably said 'die'.

Yanks have 'schedules' pronounced 'skedules', whereas we have 'schedules' pronounced 'shedules'. The latter seems to be slowly disappearing nowadays, but we don't have to say everything the way they do!

I'm no expert on Spanish, but the name 'Daiquiri' is taken from that of a district in Spanish-speaking Cuba. I'm fairly convinced that the first of the three letters 'i' would not just be omitted altogether in Spanish speech.

Treacle, if your Spanish friend says the opening syllable is 'dak' rather than 'dyke' - which is what I was trying to get at, but wasn't at all sure would be allowed! - I'm perfectly happy to stand corrected as to the pronunciation in that language. That doesn't alter the fact that I, personally, have never heard it pronounced thus. Perhaps it's an age thing? Maybe I should be saying that people of my generation always pronounced it as I do.

Treacle...a few hours later. I've no idea why I didn't think of this earlier, but I decided to check the pronunciation-guide for the word 'daiquiri' as offered in both The Oxford English Dictionary and in Chambers. Both offer as their first choice the 'die/dyke' rather than the 'dak' pronunciation!

To do a double-check, I suggest you do what I also did...ie click on http://www.m-w.com/ which is the website of the American Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Once there, type 'daiquiri' into the slot and click on 'Look it up'. Next to the pronunciation heading, both pronunciations are clearly offered and, above that, you will see two red loudspeaker-symbols. Clicking on each in turn will allow you to hear each and reveal that both seem to be just as perfectly acceptable in American English as they are in British English.

So...your Spanish friend is quite free to make fun of our inability to pronounce her language correctly...but she certainly cannot claim that the pronunciation I offered is laughable or not totally acceptable English usage on either side of the Atlantic. (Phew! I was beginning to imagine I'd made the whole thing up!) Cheers

In films etc. it is mostly pronounced dak-eary. Not saying that it means it must be true. Just adding to the subject.
