Sandstone Hearth
2 Answers
We have just had a fireplace reinstated in our Victorian house and it has uncovered the original hearth. It is a slab of light grey coloured sandstone with a nice finish. When it is wet, it takes on a lovely greenish shade, but when it is dry it looks very similar to the adjacent concrete in the firebase. Can anyone suggest a type of oil or finish that would enhance the appearance of the stone. I considered linseed oil, but dont want to be left with a greasy finish. Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi Bonzo 2000,
The sealant listed here may be of use, scroll to the bottom of the list.
We were thinking of having a slate kitchen floor and the tile shop we went to sold all the sealants... may be worth asking in a good tile shop and checking to make sure they're non flammable... :-)
