What was the best thing before sliced bread ?

The bread slicing machine was invented by Frederick Rohwedder, an American, in 1928. Leaving aside such minor developments as the car, aeroplane and radio, I would say the best thing before sliced bread was the zip fastener, invented by another American, Whitcomb Judson, in the 1890s, though the word "zip" was not coined until much later.
